The Scene @ FM4 Frequency Festival in Austria

Vito Valentinetti FM4 Frequency 2016-47
Where Are You This Week: I believed I would comply with up the chaos of the week extended Sziget Festival with a relaxing weekend at a smaller Austrian festival. I was wrong. The Austrians are as crazy as any group of festival fans that I’ve run into so so far.

Inform Me About the Festival: The annual Frequency Festival, hosted by the FM4 radio station, is a three day bender held just outside of Vienna in St. Pölten. It’s a beer-fueled smorgasbord of rock, metal, indie, and electronic music. Austria is a land land fabled for its majestic mountains, rich history of classical music, and inspiring baroque architecture — none of which I saw, but I did see a ton of artists. Vito Valentinetti FM4 Frequency 2016-2Estimated Attendance: 30,000/day

Artist Sampler: Parov Stelar, Bring Me the Horizon, Die Antwoord, The Temper Trap, Paul Kalkbrenner

Vito Valentinetti FM4 Frequency 2016-10What Makes This Festival Stand Out: The lineup. The roster of talent that FM4 lines up for this festival is just wild and they pack it all into just 3 brief days. It is a roller coaster of music, and I had to make some tough options with the overlapping sets. The strangest combination of the weekend had to be sampler friendly EDM wizard Zedd opening up for metal folk heroes Bring Me the Horizon.

Who Attends This Festival: It may possibly take place in St. Pölten, but this is extremely much a Vienna festival. Daytrippers can get from downtown Vienna to St. Pölten in thirty minutes on the the higher speed train.

Vito Valentinetti FM4 Frequency 2016-31What’s the Venue Like: It’s a pretty easy layout at Frequency. There’s two primary stages on opposite ends of the park with smaller sized stages scattered in among. A huge indoor auditorium hosts a non-quit lineup of DJs.

What Would You Modify: The attitude of Austrian campers. I’m no stranger to festival camping ecological nightmares (Germany, Switzerand, and The Netherlands to name a couple of horrors), but the Austrians took it to the subsequent level by adding their litter to the quite river that flows by way of the campground. Also, if you’re going to take a shit in the woods, at least dig a hole and bury it. I cannot unsee what I saw that day when I took a brief-reduce through the trees behind my tent.

Vito Valentinetti FM4 Frequency 2016-6The Green Scene: To combat the sea of plastic cup litter, FM4 Frequency charges a one particular euro deposit for every single drink, which you get back when you return your plastic cup to one of the bars.

Payment System: Everything in the festival ran on a cashless card program related to the one at Sziget Festival. You purchase a card, put funds on it, and use it for all food and drinks.

Household-Friendly Element: 2 out of 10. The festival crowd here may a bit also exuberant to bring the kids along. I would suggest leaving the youngsters with a trustworthy nanny. Vito Valentinetti FM4 Frequency 2016-4Would You Go Back: The lineup is worth of a return, but I would most most likely attempt to rent an apartment or remain in Vienna.

The MFW Beer Index: $ five.00 for a pint of beer.

Information, Specifics, Specifics

Exactly where is it and How Hard is to Get There: Frequency is positioned 60 km west of Vienna. Higher-speed trains depart downtown Vienna at least after an hour and only take thirty minutes to reach St. Pölten. There also seemed to be plenty of vehicle parking.

Obtaining To and From the Festival: A shuttle departs from the train station each and every thirty minutes from 10:00am to 1:00am each day.

Exactly where Do I Sleep: Camping is provided with the festival ticket, but be warned, it’s absolutely on the wild side.   If you’re going to camp, don’t program on sleeping. Like a tone-deaf version of The Sound of Music, Austrians tend to loudly sing until the sun comes up. St. Pölten appears to have a couple of rooms as properly as a couple low price range hostels.

Consuming and Drinking: Common festival food — burgers, pizza, fries — so don’t get your hopes up with specialty food trucks. There’s a couple of diverse beers to pick from and mixed drinks can be discovered everywhere. Vito Valentinetti FM4 Frequency 2016-23

100 Nights of Summer season: The Scene @ LeeFest Presents Neverland

Where Are You This Week: It’s time to ditch the heat and head to the chillier climes of the North. I’m in the United Kingdom for my first ever British festival. I know the Brits can get downright crazy at these shindigs, so I’ve selected a modest boutique party referred to as LeeFest to ease my way into the English festival scene.Vito Valentinetti LeeFest 2016-114

Inform Me About The Festival: LeeFest has one of those origin stories that is becoming legend. Ten years ago, Lee Denny started a modest backyard festival although his parents had been away on holidays. In the ten years since that first bash, LeeFest has turn into an award winning boutique festival. If you haven’t heard of the bands on the bill, you will. LeeFest has a talent for selecting tomorrow’s next large British acts. The little attendance combined with a fancy dress theme provides LeeFest its own distinctive style.

Estimated Attendance: two,000/day

Lineup Sampler: Every little thing Every thing, Circa Waves, We Are Scientists, The Huge Moon

What Tends to make This Festival Stand Out: The theme. I was blown away by the particulars of the Neverland festivalscape that LeeFest created for this year. The 3 distinct areas each and every had their personal personality full with fully dressed volunteers dancing on the elaborate sets, participating in mock battles, or posing for photographs with little ones. The artistic touches that filled LeeFest makes me believe that the organizers may even have much more fun developing this festival than I had partying at it.

Who Attends This Festival: This is a regional fest with most of the crowd from the greater London region. The age range is across the board, like families mixing it up with hen/stag parties and fancy dressed festies everywhere.

What Would You Modify: Not much. If I had to complain, the campground sat on the side of the hill. But then once again, I was 50 meters from the entrance of the festival and toilets, so entirely worth it.

The MFW Beer Index: $ six.25 for a pint of craft beer

Payment System: Money.

Vito Valentinetti LeeFest 2016-175

Household Friendly Aspect: 9 out of 10. Families are very welcome at this festival along with a designated camping region. It is not uncommon to see young children playing nicely into the evening hours.

Would You Return: If you’re tired of the mega-festival scene, LeeFest is the antidote. Every person in my camping location partied as challenging as any other festival I’ve been also this year, but the atmosphere and small size provides it a extremely chill vibe. I’m already functioning on my costume for next year.

Vito Valentinetti LeeFest 2016-166

Specifics, Information, Specifics

Where is it and How Tough is to Get There: LeeFest takes spot on a farm about an hour south of London. There’s no shortage of trains that will take you directly from Victoria Station to 1 of two shuttle drops. The closest airport is Gatwick, which took me about forty minutes by train to the nearest shuttle location. For these who want to drive, there’s ample parking that is also extremely close to the campsites.

Where Do I Sleep: You could commute from London every single day, but I definitely recommend picking up a tent along with a few supplies and camping out for the weekend.

Acquiring To and From the Festival: There were two shuttle bus pickups at the Edenbridge Town and Tonbridge train stations. Departures happened each and every thirty minutes or so until about midnight.

Consuming and Drinking: It’s an independent festival, so no shitty beer sponsors. LeeFest provided a welcome choice of craft beers and mixed drinks. There have been about a dozen food trucks at the festival featuring pulled pork meals, grilled cheese sandwiches, ice cream, and Mexican meals.

The Scene: 100 Nights of Summer season @ Pohoda Festival

Vito Valentinetti Pohoda 2016-129

Tell Me About the Festival: Pohoda (which indicates “chill”) is a single of Slovakia’s largest and oldest music festivals. Surrounded by gentle rolling mountains, the grassy airfield venue signifies plenty of space for dancing, relaxing, and enjoying the festival.

2016 Artist Sampler: The Prodigy, PJ Harvey, The Savages, Sigur Ros, Gogol Bordello, Parov Stelar

Estimated Size: 30,000

The MFW Beer Index: $ 1.50 for 1/2 liter. Score!

What Makes This Festival Stand Out: The vibe. I do not choose favorites, but following attending 50 festivals in 20 nations, this 1 that felt like home. Accurate to its name, the absolute chillness of Pohoda and the variety of music tends to make this a festival I would advise to any person.

Vito Valentinetti Pohoda 2016-194

Who Attends This Festival: Neglect hostel backpacking and bus tours. The greatest way to expertise the folks of a nation is to attend a festival like this one where the mainly Slovakian crowd couldn’t have be more friendly to me.

What’s the Venue Like: The expansive airfield means there’s room to spread out and lots of soft grass everywhere. There’s two big camping locations on each finish and the interior is your normal festival set-up with three open-air stages and two large tent stages.

What What You Alter: I would ban foreign media from covering Pohoda so that the Westerners in no way uncover this small gem.

Would You Go Back: Absolutely. Already looking for tickets.

The Green Scene: Reusable cups! I’ve noticed them earlier this season at smaller sized festivals and wondered if this game changer could scale up. Pohoda proved to me that each and every festival need to have implemented this currently. The fields remained close to litter free of charge all weekend.

Vito Valentinetti Pohoda 2016-102

Payment Method: Straight cash. I couldn’t be happier.

Family members-Friendly Issue: 10 out of ten. Pohoda delivered a master course in how you do loved ones festivaling with their youngsters-only activity location and stage. The a lot more jubilant festies remained respectful to households and there’s a wealth of spacious spots to get pleasure from the music. Would adore to see a lot more festivals in the US follow this lead and introduce far more households to the festival world.

Vito Valentinetti Pohoda 2016-104

Details, Specifics, Information

Exactly where Is it and How Challenging is it to Get There: Pohoda is outdoors the city of Trencin — about 60km north of Bratislava. Trains from Vienna, Prague, and Bratislava seemed to be the easiest alternative obtaining to the festival.

Exactly where Do I Sleep: Camping.

Eating and Drinking: I’m nevertheless dreaming about the meals vendors at Pohoda. There’s national picks like potato pancakes, chicken noodle soup, and fried cheese along with vegetarian choices. I ate at the stalls all weekend. Beer tents rule the drinking even though if you search it out, there’s a Czech sweet wine that tasted delicious.

Acquiring To and From the Festival: There’s a shuttle bus from the central train station that leaves every single 20 minutes or so and fees under $ 1. There’s also parking if you bring a car.

The Scene: Falling For This is Not a Adore Song Festival 2016

one hundred Nights of Summer: Days #1-3
Location: Nîmes, France
Stats: 50 Artists, 4 Stages, 3 Days
Genre: Indie Rock

Editor’s Note: This post was initially published on our mini-site 100 Nights of Summer season. I’m at present traveling across Europe to 15 festivals in 15 weekends in 15 countries. See more photos and stories from last year’s adventure right here.  -VV

The sunny skies of southern France welcomed me to one particular of the country’s biggest indie rock fests. This boutique festival held in the super charming city of Nîmes remains an undiscovered gem for obtaining up close and individual with some incredible acts. This is Not a Adore Song (TINALS) also impressed with the age diversity of the crowd. Households with modest young children rubbed shoulders with older rockers and teen hipsters.

Some highlights from the weekend:

Back to function

It’s been virtually just more than a year because I embarked on my prior adventure — 15 festivals, 15 nations, 15 weeks. It feels very good to be back. Very first quit is at TINALS at an indie rock festival that I only heard about a couple months ago when I stumbled across this super sick lineup.

This is Not a Love Song

My wrist has felt naked for the last six months

Dilly Dally in the Grand Hall

The 1st official show for 100 Nights of Summer! Katie Monks from Toronto’s Dilly Dally sounds like she smokes a pack of cigarettes chased by a fifth of Jack ahead of every show and just crushes it. Couldn’t be happier that this is the initial act I caught for the duration of 100 NOS..
Vito Valentinetti TINALS 2016-6

It may possibly be vibrant sunshine outside, but the Grand Hall makes each show really feel like a sweaty two:00am efficiency in a pitch black club. Here’s the song that produced the crowd go all nuts.

Ty Segall and the Muggers at the Flamingo Stage

It is nothing at all but vibrant sunshine as I head to my 1st outside show with Ty Segall and the Muggers. These guys are hitting the festival circuit hard this year and it’s worth it to catch the show as they bring a bit of swagger back into rock n’ roll.

Destroyer creating us really feel stuff

Meet the venue!

Paloma, the performing arts center of Nîmes is positioned on the northern edge of the city. It’s…an intriguing design and style to say the least. At some angles, it reminded me of “the beast slouching towards Bethlehem” and at other angles (and significantly less pretentious) it looked like a giant brown turd.Vito Valentinetti TINALS 2016-34Two of the four stages can be located in right here — the Grand Salle, a cavernous area with balcony and the super intimate dance friendly Club Paloma. Most of the action outdoors centers about the Flamingo Stage with up and comers performing just to the proper at the Mosquito Stage.

Clouds on the horizon

Even though enjoying a fast beer and picnic lunch ahead of heading into a show, the French guy subsequent to me points at the sky and says, “Look. A monster cloud”. He was correct, but it turned out to be a gentle monster and the rolling thunderstorms have been more than in hours. Vito Valentinetti TINALS 2016-23

Gospel punk with Algiers

Rain on the outdoors meant a packed hall on the inside. They completely delivered with a foot-stomping, ass-shaking set to a packed room in the La Grande Hall.

Elvis has entered the building

If there’s a single breakout star of the weekend, it has to be French Elvis. I’ve seen plenty of “festival marriages”, but never ever one particular with a Las Vegas style ceremony comprehensive with a laugh-a-minute Elvis, guys in wedding dresses, and impromptu sing-a-longs.

I’m peeing into a bucket of sawdust

Remarkable bathroom solution for a festival with these super clean composting bathroom facilities. I took these shots on a Saturday and the spot nevertheless appears spotless.

Art everywhere

This wasn’t at the festival but I identified this sick mural in a rain sewer across the street from TINALS under a McDonald’s parking lot.

Dinosaur Jr. closing out Saturday night

I’m not the greatest photographer. Possibly it’s due to the fact for the duration of shows like this I just cannot quit jumping around. Be more skilled man. Anyway, Dinosaur Jr. nonetheless sounds fucking fantastic. Hopefully I’ll be capable to see them a couple of far more occasions this summer time.

Meet A Festival Fan: Marcel from Switzerland

I don’t get starstruck by artists, but I do shed my thoughts when I see kick ass campers like this a single. Marcel and his buddy from have been camping in the parking lot for all 3 days and as I’m warned — “don’t smell very good.” They tell me about 50 others have been crashing right here for the festival. Then they offer me quite a bit of vodka. I’m ready for Sunday!

Flower crowns, button crafting, and French drinking games

Among the flower crowning, old college video games, hat design and style, and button workshops, there was plenty to keep busy among sets. There’s also some bizarre French peg throwing game that I never figured out.

The TINALS choir covers Destroyer’s Times Square

TINALS featured a roving choir that would break into song about the festival grounds. Here they are producing a unique look at a festival wedding. Watch for Elvis dropping some moves towards the end. Enjoyable reality: 1 of the singers ended up getting my Air BnB host.

Sunsets, Tortoise, and hamburgers

Following seeing drool-worthy meals all weekend, I decided to track down dinner at a single of the outstanding food trucks at TINALS. This disarmingly charming duo from FollyBun’s set me up in hamburger nirvana. Just seeing this image is generating me hungry once again.

Vito Valentinetti TINALS 2016-27

Complete of burgers and beer, I did handle to catch this fantastic set from Tortoise where I swear each member can play each instrument.
