Following selecting up Radiohead, Poland’s mega-festival Open’er, has just announced that Foo Fighters will be joining the bill. Foo Fighters will also drop by Madrid and the Mad Cool Festival along with Green Day.
Genesis fans unite! Phil Collins will be showing up at British Summer season Time for his only European festival appearance. The show is scheduled for June 30, 2017.
The midweek INmusic Festival out of Croatia just nabbed Arcade Fire as their very first headliner. The band will also be heading to the Best Kept Secret Festival in The Netherlands.
Annie Mac Presents Lost & Identified will be in Malta this spring and have posted their first wave lineup announcement which will incorporate DJ supergroup J.E.S.U.S (Jackmaster, Eats Every thing, Seth Troxler, and Skream).

The singer follows a host of massive names to have taken part in the Late Late Show segment, which has become a huge hit since Corden took over the US talk show last year. The likes of Adele, One Direction, Justin Bieber, Sia and Mariah Carey have all appeared to sing along to their own biggest songs, as well as a handful of their favourites from other artists.
Tomorrow (Thursday 25 August) Britney Spears’ Carpool Karaoke hits the internet, but the trailer has people a little confused. The singer appears to be simply mouthing along to ‘Toxic’, rather than singing it live.
“Britney will be the first human being to make a Karaoke lipsync. Queen,” reads the top comment on YouTube. Others agree, saying, “Auto-Tune Karaoke? or Lipsync karaoke? we all know she cant sing for real.” Harsh.
Meanwhile, speaking to GQ, Corden recently said of his dream karaoke guest, “Beyoncé. It would break the Internet. She’s on tour right now. We’re working on it.”
Unfortunately though, Kanye West has cancelled on Corden – who began hosting the US talk show last year, replacing Craig Ferguson – twice. “He’ll do it eventually,” he insisted. “He wants to do it.”
He also revealed that West had sent “about three dozen white roses, of course. Arranged in the shape of a cube. What could be more Kanye than that?”

Reading + Leeds Festival takes place this weekend, from Friday 26 August to Sunday 28 August. The Reading edition takes place at Little John’s Farm on Richfield Avenue in Reading, while Leeds Festival is held in Branham Park.
There’s two nights of joint headliners this year. While Red Hot Chili Peppers have a headline slot to themselves, the other two nights are both being shared. Foals and Disclosure share a headline slot on one night, while Biffy Clyro and Fall Out Boy share the other. That basically means five headliners for the price of three.
What other good bands are playing?
Check out the full line-up poster below. You obviously can’t possibly watch all of those bands though (unless you have a time turner, in which case, go forth and conquer) – so some of the acts not to miss include Chvrches, The Internet, Hinds, Haim, Nas, Blossoms, The 1975, The Japanese House, Ezra Furman, Lady Leshurr and Little Simz. Alex Turner and Miles Kane have been touring Europe this month, and brought alt-rock band YAK along with them on the road. It seems things haven’t gone smoothly though.
After a fan Twitter account tweeted that the two bands had got into a fight about the soundcheck, they screenshot two since-deleted tweets from YAK. “Some of @LastShadowPupps crew have been assholes to us and not letting us soundcheck throughout tour. Cunts sorry Berlin,” read the first tweet.
The second said, “A disservice to us but more importantly the audience that pay to see a show. Glad it’s over never again. Biglove.”

The show in question, as NME reports, was at the 3,500 capacity Columbiahalle in Berlin, at which Turner’s dad David played the saxophone on stage while his mother watched the show.
Meanwhile. Johnny Marr recently joined The Last Shadow Puppets to perform a beautiful version of The Smiths’ ‘Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me’ in Manchester.
The hometown hero and Smiths icon turned solo star Marr came on stage during The Last Shadow Puppets headline show at Castlefield Bowl – as Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner added a lounge lizard swagger to the track, while the rest of the band made it swoon with a searing 1960s Morricone-esque waltz.
In other news, Alex Turner recently warned Arctic Monkeys’ fans to expect a new album any time soon.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the hugely successful 90s pop group’s debut single, ‘Wannabe’, and rumours have swirled for many months now over how they plan to celebrate. Victoria Beckham politely ruled herself out of proceedings fairly early on. It didn’t stop fans hoping though.
Last month, Emma Bunton, Geri Horner (formerly Halliwell) and Mel B appeared together in a video teasing a reunion under the name GEM.
“We’ve been thinking,” they say in the video. “We have the best fans in the whole entire world. You’ve stood by us for 20 years, and we want to say a big thank you. We’ve had our ups and downs but you’ve always been there and we want to celebrate and have a party, and when we do you’re all invited.”
Then the following message appears on the screen: “Happy 20th birthday to all our fans. This is a celebration for you! We hope to tell you soon what you want, what you really really want.”
Now, in an interview with This Morning, Emma Bunton has elaborated on Posh Spice’s willingness to be involved. “For a long time she has wished us the best,” said the former Baby Spice. “I was talking to her at David’s birthday party and he said,’You’ve got to do something’. Maybe she will change her mind, she does that, who knows.”
As for how likely it is that there’ll be a reunion at all, Bunton added, “’There is nothing set in stone I personally think we should do something. I think we need a Posh.”
Meanwhile, a source recently told The Sun that Mel C, who also didn’t appear in last month’s teaser video, is consulting lawyers in a bid to block any reunion happening without her.

Once a year Way Out West festival feed the indie hearts of Sweden. And they have been doing so for the past ten years. Music lovers have cried to Bon Iver, danced their socks off to Prince (literally, in my case) and sung along to Yeezy himself.
This year’s line-up was no exception. For their ten year anniversary, Way Out West booked legends of the likes of Morrissey, Grace Jones and PJ Harvey, as well as rising stars such as Dua Lipa, Rat Boy and Fidlar.
From the intimate club sets to the headline slots. Here are our highlights.
Zara Larsson has become a pop star beyond compare. Not only for creating killer tunes (that have been the soundtrack of my summer and probably yours too), but she has also become one of the main advocates of the feminist movement. Her hour long set was both a celebration of music and equality.
Larsson managed to show off some thrilling moves and vocals all while taking on important subjects, such as the endless waves of sexual assaults that have been flooding Swedish festivals this summer. Needless to say, she’s exactly what the industry needs right now.
THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS
Infinite sex appeal, James Bond-esque mystique and symphonic strings overflowed the crowd when The Last Shadow Puppets made their first Swedish visit in eight years. Though a bit woozy, Alex Turner moved majestically across the stage and with the enticing Miles Kane on his left, the duo left the crowd in awe.
Together they spawned both old and new material into world class tunes, proving they make songs that are meant to be experienced in the flesh. And with a little help from both a string quartet and members of glam-rock band Mini Mansions, the magic was enhanced.
“I’m totally wired”, Miles Kane crooned in their cover of The Falls ’82 hit. So are we, Miles. So are we.
Jamie xx and Way Out West seem to be in a growing relationship, and a beautiful one at that. Throughout the years, the humble producer has made his way from the festival’s smallest stage to its biggest.
During his set, Jamie xx combined elements of 80s house, funk and heavy guitars all while flicking through his portable vinyl collection. Let’s cherish the (possibly) last old school DJ of our time and grant him the world’s biggest stages, I say.
Whitney, oh, Whitney. The only band to spill about getting drunk on Redbull Vodka and make it sound cool. Luckily they’re music is just as good as their alcohol talk. If not better.
In an interview that we did with the band during the festival (and that you will get your hands on very soon) they told us that the band is made up of seven best friends. And it shows. Whitney is a unity where each instrument lifts the others into greatness. That includes Julien Ehrlich’s celestial voice. Seeing them is like laying down on the forest ground, inhaling the magic of nature. That is as good of a grade as one can get.
Let’s not neglect the fact that some of Sweden’s most prominent musicians, including First Aid Kit and members of Peter, Bjorn and John, had made it to the band’s late night gig. Also a very good grade.
Music is never as beautiful as when it comes with a message. When a soul genius takes a stand for the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as preaching self happiness, it can only result in magic. Seinabo Sey’s rich voice beautifully intertwined with the harmony of the orchestra, as she chanted her ever so moving lines. “Someone just told me to leave all my sorrow. If that is true, I don’t know who to be”. I told you; magic.
New to the festival is Höjden, simply translated into “The height”. A scene located at the peak of the park where Way Out West is held, with the main purpose of creating intimate shows and bringing musicians and fans closer together.
When José Gonzáles took the stage the crowd were sat in the grass, conveying the feeling of being gathered around the camp fire — although Gonzáles was anything but the obnoxious guitar guy. A bit of sun and we all could have been part of the ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ cast. Fine, maybe not. But one can wish.
THE LIBERTINES’ LONG AWAITED RETURN TO SWEDEN
The Libertines were a bit late to their gig. 25 hours late, to be exact. Was it worth the wait? Yes. Pete and Carl took the stage in their iconic jackets and in the bat of an eye Way Out West was transcended into Camden Road and 2004 was just around the corner.

A fascinating tune with elements of R&B, indie and hip hop that gained the attention of Jamie XX and Say Lou Lou.
The video for ‘Cage’ follows a man and a girl wandering at night between the streets of a city before losing theirselves to dance in a desert park.
New Portals manage perfectly well pop and electronic music combining them in beautiful songs, their previous singles ‘Stay Here Tonight’ and ‘Groove Boy’ have been noticed by Radio 1’s Phil Taggart and Huw Stephens and The Guardian’s ‘New Band Of The Week’, not by chance. The Irish duo will play at Moira Calling Festival on September 10th.

The band’s ninth record, the follow-up to 2013’s Damages, already has a release date – 21 October – but they’re yet to reveal its title. If the secrecy is making you feel a little impatient, have no fear – they’ve just unleashed a brand new track from it.
The song got its world premiere on BBC Radio 1, courtesy of Daniel P. Carter, and “features the band’s trademark heavy guitars and melodic rock.”
They’re also set to play two intimate shows in the UK next month – both of which are in London. The first will be at Bush Hall on 7 September, while the second will take place the following night at Islington Assembly Hall.

It’s set to be released on their debut album, Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect, alongside existing singles ‘Vivienne’, ‘A Young Understanding’, and ‘Flame’.
This new cut is among some of the slickest indie pop to come out of Britain since The Vaccines and will help propel you with positivity from now until the weekend.
Speaking about ‘She Said’, lead singer Oscar Pollock said: “When all the drink has been drunk, when all the flirting has fumbled, then we might ask ourselves; should I have gone to the club?”
The album will be released on 6 January via Chess Club/RCA, who also helped launch the successful careers of Swim Deep and Wolf Alice.
The Reading four-piece have had a mammouth year so far with two sold out headline tours and acclaimed performances at Glastonbury, Dot to Dot and Secret Garden Party under their belts. Next up they’re set for Reading/Leeds main stage slots and another headline tour, this time taking in bigger venues including London’s Heaven.
The band popped into our office last year for a stripped back session and were touring around in a tiny white van. It can’t be long until the luxury sleeper buses are their new home. They’ve got such a natural flair for writing hits that they’ll make a big dent in the charts next year.

The iconic Britpop band split acrimoniously back in 2009 after the already fragile relationship between brothers Noel and Liam broke down completely. “I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer,” said Noel at the time. Their final performance was at V Festival in Staffordshire – they cancelled an appearance at the festival’s Chelmsford edition the following day.
Seven years on, and their relationship is tentatively on the mend. That doesn’t mean a reunion is on the cards though – a few months back Noel said he would only do so for £20 million.
Now, Liam Gallagher has thrown his support behind a reunion. Speaking to Q Magazine, Liam said, “I believe Oasis will sail again and it’ll be glorious. If it’s really about the fans, Noel, let’s do it – because they want it. One year. Tour for a year. We’d smash it. My bags are still packed from my last tour, so I’m ready.”
This isn’t the first time the musician has suggested he’d be willing to bury the hatched with his brother. He sent these tweets last month.

Finally, years of waiting and months of false alarms crystallised into something real, something we can hold in our hands while breathing a sigh of relief. And yet, even though it’s here, in the world – a real, tangible entity at last – it’s still dripping with ambiguity. Is it called Blond? Or Blonde? Which one of the tracklistings is the correct one? What is he trying to say to us about gender and sexuality and aggression?
Upon its release, many critics rushed to be the first to have their two cents heard. Many fans did the same. They skimmed through its weird complexities, like someone who’s been starved consumes, ravenously, unquestioningly, any food that comes their way. Frank Ocean fans have always been rewarded for patience though, and patience is what Blond/Blonde demands. A few days into its release, as the dust starts to settle, some commentaries are emerging that feel thoughtful, and less surface. Here are some of the best.
The confusion over the spelling and track listing only adding to its intrigue
You’d have thought, in the four years it took to make this album, that they’d have had the time to clear up any confusion over things as trivial as spelling and track listing, right? Well, Rolling Stone thinks this lack of clarity is a good thing.
“A day later, pop-up stores opened across the country, stocked with copies of Ocean’s Boys Don’t Cry, a glossy zine full of poems, photos of hot cars and hot boys and, affixed to one of its pages, a CD containing an album calledBlonde. The title was stylized in accompanying art as the masculine blond — a grammatical tweak that gave the LP, intriguingly, two genders at once. Apple Music, meanwhile, unveiled a different Blonde, its tracklist featuring slight modifications. If all these twists and turns left observers feeling dizzy, well, isn’t that exactly how Ocean wanted it?”
He uses his guest cameos carefully
Not everyone uses big star names to get their music more attention, or make it more accessible. Ocean, in fact, often uses them for the opposite effect – as The Verge explains.
“Current reigning champions like Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar drop by, as does Brian Eno. But Ocean doesn’t use these guest spots to shine his singles into radio hits or brag about his famous friends. Their presence is often cursory. Lamar gets more words in than Beyoncé in “Skyline To,” but his voice is still buried underneath Ocean’s own. Kendrick’s presence only adds flesh to Ocean’s thoughts, like a director’s background commentary or a one-man chorus in a Greek play.”
It might not be instantly accessible, but there are still hooks
The Guardian points out that – though there might not be any No.1 hits on Blond, it’s still not short of a good hook.
“Under all the subtlety and still surfaces, there are actually hooks here – just not the needy, salesmanlike kind that wave at you, shouting; “Here I am, remember this song!” The melodies– not only on the swaying soul waltz of ‘Pink + White’, or the tick-tock melody of the conventional R&B sections of Night, but in the outer-space balladry of Siegfried and the future gospel crawl of the heartbreaking Godspeed – lodge very quickly in the memory and stay there.”
He uses his sexuality as a weapon
A few days before the release of Ocean’s debut solo album, Channel Orange, he posted an essay to Tumblr recalling the time, aged 19, that he first fell in love with a man. He wanted to reveal this memory, he said, because there were songs and lyrics on the album which spoke to a queer sexuality he had yet to publicly acknowledge. For a hip hop artist to speak on this was a groundbreaking thing, and Ocean’s emotional vulnerability paid off. On Blond/Blonde though, he cascades through sexually aggressive imagery aimed at both men and women. Rolling Stone explains why this is no bad thing.
“On ‘Good Guy’ he visits a “gay bar” on a blind date; on “Futura Free” he warns an antagonist, “I don’t cut bitches no more, but your bitch my exception” — his sexuality isn’t just a spectrum here, but a weapon. There’s something radical about that, and it affirms Ocean’s greatest strength: He refuses to be pinned down.”
His voice might not be the world’s greatest, but his lyrical poeticism is second to none
Billboard doesn’t think Ocean’s voice is quite on a par with the likes of Miguel or Chris Brown in terms of originality and flare, but his turn of phrase more than makes up for it.
“For Ocean, words are his greatest weapon. He’s not a vocal powerhouse like Miguel. He’s not a dancing machine like Chris Brown. He’s not a funky, one-man-band like Anderson .Paak. But his ability to turn a phrase bests each of his contemporaries. “If you could fly then you’d feel south/ Up north’s getting cold soon,” Frank sings on Blonde’s “Pink + White,” where he thoughtfully compares a lover’s need for warmth in a relationship to a bird fleeing winter’s chill and heading to the tropics. This is what makes Ocean special.”
It’s background music, but only if you want it to be
“Blonde makes for sensationally beautiful background music that can morph into a bizarre hodgepodge of disparate ideas when you concentrate on bringing it into the foreground.”

The singer’s new album, the follow-up to 2014’s A Perfect Contradiction, will be “aptly named” The Architect – but it won’t be out until 2017.
That’s because Faith is planning to “take a short while off to have a baby.” In a statement on Facebook, she added, “I have spent my whole life wanting to be a mother and now the time has come for me to do so. I feel so lucky.”
She also said, “I am nervous and excited about being a mum and just need to be normal and low key for a while. Pregnancy and motherhood is a very personal thing : daunting, new and worrying at times and I don’t want to add to it by having to ‘look’ a certain way when pregnant or be photographed pregnant or with my child.
“I wasn’t raised like that and I don’t want my child to be. I want the baby to have the freedom of a normal life.”

I have been working with the amazing Jesse Shatkin on it as producer and it has been a real honour. It is called “the architect” and is very aptly named as it leads me on to my next announcement. I am so delighted to tell you I am going to take a short while off to have a baby. I have spent my whole life wanting to be a mother and now the time has come for me to do so. I feel so lucky.
This means I won’t be involved in the voice this year or releasing my album this year either.
So while you are all patiently waiting I would like you to know that I am grateful for your continued support and patience and I hope that you will respect my new family with our privacy in a time which should be calm and without anxiety. I really do not want this child to be in the public eye as it won’t have chosen to and I hope everyone can understand that.
I am nervous and excited about being a mum and just need to be normal and low key for a while. Pregnancy and motherhood is a very personal thing : daunting, new and worrying at times and I don’t want to add to it by having to “look” a certain way when pregnant or be photographed pregnant or with my child. I wasn’t raised like that and I don’t want my child to be. I want the baby to have the freedom of a normal life.
When I return I will be full of energy and excited to come and sing for you again. I am passionate about my job and what I do in the public eye but consider these to be two separate things, not one in the same.
The album is sounding super exciting and I can’t wait to share it with you all. I am very lucky and grateful in the knowledge I will get to do so very soon. Your loyalty is a gift and astounds me every album release. I am grateful for your understanding and promise to return fully fledged when I have had this moment of solitude and new life. I am beyond happy about it.

Frank Ocean has cast aside the cryptic clues and finally dropped the follow up to his critically acclaimed album channel ORANGE. It took a while to get here – 1502 days to be exact – but we’re thankful the time has finally arrived. Keeping fans at bay and fuelling their frustrations on multiple occasions, the man Rolling Stone called a “gifted avant-R&B smoothie” made it clear on his Tumblr page that he’s thankful the fans stayed both on him and with him throughout the long and drawn out creative process:
“I had the time of my life making all of this. Thank you all. Especially those of you who never let me forget I had to finish. Which is basically every one of y’all. Haha. Love you.”
Almost tricking fans into thinking the messy and at times beautiful visual album Endless – which he released via Apple Music on Friday – was the album fans had been waiting on for so long, his rollout continued to be as sporadic as his public sightings when it was announced there was another album to be released – this time solely audio. Fans were then informed there would be four pop up stores opened on Saturday evening/Sunday morning in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and London, and once the fans got in they took to social media to notify the world that there was a magazine available in the stores, titled Boys Don’t Cry – the longstanding working title for Ocean’s follow up album – and it contained a free copy of his new album, Blonde.
A digital version spelt slightly different – Blond – was released via iTunes and Apple Music the same evening the pop up shops were opened. Featuring a slightly modified track list to the physical release found in the Boys Don’t Cry magazine, we’ve now had some time to digest it and here’s our breakdown track-by-track of the much anticipated new album from Mr. Ocean.
Opening like you hoped a new Frank Ocean album would, the album’s lead single is both fluid and atmospheric. Lifting the curtain on materialistic self-indulgence, the song hears Frank tell a gold digger she isn’t going to get what she wants out of him. Starting with a high pitch added to his vocals, about three minutes in Frank’s all to familiar weightless tone finds its way back with an almost rap-like delivery. Paying homage to Pimp C – the UGK member who died from a reported cough syrup overdose in 2007 – as well as then later on shouting out his former record label, Rap-A-Lot Records, the trippy tone of the instrumental feels like something the southern label powerhouse could have put out themselves. The pop up shop version of this features added vocals from KOHH.
Lacking an obvious rhythm section, ‘Ivy’ is steered by a constant guitar strum which is then overlaid with yet more guitars creating a string-dominated instrumental for Frank to sing about growing up and the evolution of a relationship that started in the friend zone. A little empty in terms of any real punch, the track really slows the pace of the album down but being that it’s only two tracks in there’s no real damage. In fact, the dreamy soundscape provides the perfect chill out soundtrack to anyone needing to drift off and reminisce about the good old days.
‘Pink + White’
Produced by Pharrell Williams and featuring vocals from Beyoncé, ‘Pink + White’ is a stellar moment on Blond. Accompanied by some beautifully lavish keys, Frank once again take his thought process back to the memory of a past lover. With colour continuing to play a big part in Frank’s creative process – think channel ORANGE and ‘Pink Matter’ – this time applying unnatural colours to nature while relating them to sexual acts, the songwriting on this particular record could be compared the unorthodox songwriting genius that is Brian Wilson.
Similar to the ‘Not Just Money’ skit on channel ORANGE where a friend of his mother’s explains that money isn’t the be all and end all, ‘Be Yourself’ hears Frank’s mother spout some words of wisdom about drug use. Over a futuristically murky backdrop that mirrors something from the Blade Runner soundtrack, Frank’s mother says to her son: “be yourself and know that that’s good enough…Don’t use that cocaine or marijuana because that stuff is highly addictive. When people become weed-heads they become sluggish, lazy, stupid and unconcerned.”
Contradicting his mother’s advice on the previous skit, ‘Solo’ is an ode to drug usage and needing it, especially when riding solo. Addressing topics such as abortion, this is a very reflective record for Frank. Over another rhythm-less slice of instrumentation that’s led by an organ of sorts, high on weed, red eyes and all, he’s talking to someone but you’re left wondering who. By the end of the record you’re even wondering how – you’re led to believe it might be via text.
Short and not really making too much sense, random thoughts are the main ingredient this time around. With a barely noticeable Kendrick Lamar feature – he’s occasionally heard on backing vocals – and Tyler The Creator on the boards, you’d expect a lot more bang for your buck on this one. Lacking direction and context, this might be both the worst and most confusing moment on Blond.
Frank Ocean continues to offer up brooding backdrops that have no real climax and feel incoherently misguided due to not having an instrumental heartbeat. Where are the drums? Playing like an album intro, ‘Self Control’ ironically has no self control when it comes to indulging in an onslaught of atmospheric strums and chimes. Sure, some of the vocal work is epic, especially during the song’s closing minute, but for three songs on the trot you’re left wondering if instead you’re in fact listening to a James Blake album.
Looking at both homosexual and heterosexual dating, this is one of the braver moments on Blond. While the majority of the album so far has looked at male/female relations, being that Frank Ocean is essentially the R&B poster child for the gay community after admitting to the world he was bisexual back in 2012 you’re left wondering if he’s still embracing that part of his life. ‘Good Guy’ answers this question. Not too deep in nature, it’s more about a blind date that Frank realises isn’t for him. Murmuring over a simplistic yet perfect keyboard arrangement, this is one of those times when less is more.
Feeling a little like something The-Dream might have put together for his debut album Love Hate – due in part the obvious dividing sound switch midway through – ‘Nights’ reintroduces drums back into album. Detailing different events that happened to him during the darkness of night, the uplifting rap-inspired first half Frank delivers has a bounce Blond has well and truly missed up until this point – apart from perhaps ‘Nikes’. The second half of the song feels exactly like Take Care era Drake – think ‘Marvin’s Room’ and ‘Over My Dead Body’.
Continuing a working relationship that was last seen on Frank’s ‘Pink Matter’ record, Andre 3000 lays down one of the album’s key moments. Continuing with the theme of riding solo that the song’s predecessor kickstarted, the ever elusive Andre spits his thoughts on unaccompanied lifestyles over a skittish array of keys that midway through turns into a snappy electronic bass drop that mirrors an early 90s video game score. And the most talked about lyric of the month goes to: “After 20 years in I’m so naive, I was under the impression that everyone wrote they own verses/ It’s coming back different and yeah that shit hurts me.” Shot at Drake? Perhaps.
An intense moment that acts like a shotgun loaded with loud and brash instrumental bullets, this is the part of the album where things stop to make sense for a moment. Feeling like Frank needed to let loose and just be free from restraints, he can be forgiven for experimenting with his creativity in such a messy manner, everyone needs to let off some steam some time. However, it’s not a pretty listen.
Looking at love in the digital age and the social media stalking, French producer SebastiAn recalls how his relationship fell apart because his girlfriend accused him of cheating because he wouldn’t add her on Facebook. An all too familiar narrative in this day and age, hearing someone with a certain level of fame tell the story just proves it can happen to anyone, regardless of status. With hardly any production heard on the track, this is more a narrative filler to serve as food for thought.
‘Close to You’
Autotune and Frank Ocean don’t mix too well. When you have such a recognisable and ear-pleasing vocal tone why ruin it? Yes, this might be a reworking of Stevie Wonder’s cover of The Carpenters’ song of the same name and Stevie himself used autotune on the track, Frank’s unique voice sounds restricted with an electronic coat on it. As it goes the song isn’t too bad. Syrupy and full of zing, it just would have sounded better minus the autotune.
Easily the album’s finest moment, ‘White Ferrari’ is trademark Frank Ocean. Heavenly from both a vocal and production standpoint, Frank’s musical palette is wet with romantic croons, soothing synths, and pure intentions. A ride that could reflect a dream, Frank and the object of his desires changes speed and direction throughout, all the while examining the magic that is their bond and the purity surrounding it. Again missing its rhythm section, this time it works due to the narrative being so strong. Admitting he was listening to The Beatles for inspiration during the making of Blond, the song includes a line from their record ‘Here, There and Everywhere’ – “Here, making each day of the year.”
Passionate and poetic, this is Frank looking through a detailed lens at what’s really important in life. Discussing the homeless and openly admitting to sharing his home with those in need, over the delicate and airy instrumental raindrops that build with the heart twitching strings he references everything from Elliot Smith’s ‘A Fond Farewell’ to yet another relationship that fulfilled his need for pure and unfiltered love.
Wishing himself luck on his journey into manhood, ‘Godspeed’ is a reimagined version of Frank’s boyhood. Adding to the holy vocal tone of gospel singer Kim Burrell, the production builds a church-type atmosphere. Again lacking any percussion, the track however does hit you in the gut with a sense of pride from the word go. In the Boys Don’t Cry magazine Frank wrote of the song: “Boys do cry, but I don’t think I shed a tear for a good chunk of my teenage years. It’s surprisingly my favourite part of my life so far. Surprising, to me, because the current phase is what I was asking the cosmos for when I was a kid.”
Reflecting on his rise to prominence, ‘Futura Free’ looks at Frank’s accomplishments and what it took to get there. Feeling like an off cut from Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo album, especially when the distorted vocal tone and backdrop is introduced towards the first half of the track, fame, religion and sexuality are on the menu of discussion while the conspiracy theories surrounding 2Pac still being alive are also touched upon. The second half of the song features a series of questions fired at Mikey Alfred, Sage Elsesser, Na-kel Smith and other Illegal Civilization members by Frank’s younger brother Ryan Breaux.
Overall Blond is nowhere near as strong as channel ORANGE. With no obvious single – which isn’t always a bad thing – there’s only a handful of songs that truly recapture the Frank Ocean fans grew to love on both nostalgia/ULTRA and channel ORANGE. Yes, this is a completely separate body of work to his previous releases but still you expect a certain level of consistency.
Aside from the consistency issues, Blond does have a strong reflective quality to it. Music serves so many purposes and it feels like Frank’s latest body of work was built to help those in need of escape from the madness of the world. While lacking percussion in various places, instrumentally the album is in fact beautiful. Pushing the boundaries of creative production with help from adverse soundbites implanted into the mainframe of Blond, it’s a courageous body of work that doesn’t always hit its mark but does more to heighten the senses than the majority of albums today.

The band who have two core members and employ top-notch session players, sound accomplished enough to be taking on stadiums, and fans of The National and Interpol will be fueled with confidence that anthemic indie is still done well.
‘Darwinism’ would melt hearts just sang on an acoustic, but wigged-out guitar solos, horns, and backing vocals show the band pushing their creative limits, and driving in all the right directions.
This track is the first song to be lifted from their second album, set for release in 2017. If the consequence of their first album, released last year, was to see them break in their native Australia – they reached number 11 in the charts with it. Then the second album, if ‘Darwinism’ is anything to go by, will see Holy Holy make a huge impact internationally. They’ve got to a level now where they’re too powerful to go unnoticed.
The film, shot in black in white, captures the band performing live with conviction and is cut with some spectacular retro film footage.
The band have have a few surprises up their sleeve for fans attending their UK and European tour in September and October. Guitarist Oscar Dawson gives some insight: “The sound has developed and expanded. We’re using different textures, stretching out the sound, playing louder, swapping instruments in some instances, and for some of the shows we may even bring some horns along. So the show has become more exciting and vibrant.”
The tour includes a tantalising show with fast rising London-based rock sorts Saint Agnes have been added as support for Electrowerkz.

We play fuzzed up distorted garage pop songs about vampires and religion and stuff. A bit like Dookie if everything was through a Big Muff – and with weirder lyrics…
What can we expect from the album?
We’ve really tried to capture the feel of a Mouses live show in this album so you can expect a lot of noise, a lot of energy, a lot of fuzz and maybe even some surprises too. Did someone say ballad?
Reading & Leeds, how does that feel?
Unbelievable! It’s something we’ve always dreamed of playing since we were about 14. I went to Leeds for a good 5 years in a row when I left school and I have such good memories of going. To be actually playing now just feels insane. We really couldn’t be more excited to play!
Favourite meal deal when out on the road?
Depends on the service station haha. Not a meal deal as such, but usually Greggs, there’s always a Greggs isn’t there. And Mcdonald’s breakfasts are a must. And energy drinks and coffee – we’re not a healthy band are we?
What’s a fun fact about the band?
We wrote our first song together when we were 14. It was called ‘Irresponsible’ and our band was also called Irresponsible. We entered our school talent show and absolutely didn’t win.

As previously reported, the film was controversial from the very beginning. Particularly when it was revealed that Jared Leto, the 30 Seconds To Mars frontman who plays The Joker, sent anal beads, used condoms and a dead pig to his castmates – including the likes of Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne – while they were filming, in an effort to get into character.
In a subsequent interview, Viola Davis revealed that he sent her a box of bullets. “You know what, it was a little worrisome,” she told E! News, “It made you a little nervous, and I’m pretty tough. It scared me a little bit.” A subsequent viral tweet pretty much summed up Davis’ feelings towards Leto.

The film was released earlier this month, and critics absolutely savaged it. The Telegraph called it “crushingly puerile” and “depressing,” criticising the “eardrum-puncturingly bad dialogue, scowling self-pity, covert pornography and scrappy CGI.” Robbie Collin’s review went on to describe Leto’s Joker as “a kind of Halloween-themed version of Rik Mayall’s Richie, from the Nineties BBC sitcom Bottom.”
Vanity Fair, meanwhile, described the film, which also stars Will Smith, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis and Margot Robbie, as “ugly and boring, a toxic combination that means the film’s highly fetishized violence doesn’t even have the exciting tingle of the wicked or the taboo. It’s simply a dull chore steeped in flaccid machismo, a shapeless, poorly edited trudge that adds some mildly appalling sexism and even a soupçon of racism to its abundant, hideously timed gun worship.”

Rolling Stone called the film a “botch job” that “makes Fantastic Four look good,” while Buzzfeed called it “disastrous,” complaining that it had turned Robbie’s Harley Quinn into “its damaged dolly jerk-off material.”
It’s not all bad news though. The Suicide Squad soundtrack, which includes original songs from the likes of Grimes and Twenty One Pilots, alongside songs by Skrillex, Lil Wayne, Kehlani, Eminem and Panic! At The Disco, is at No.1 in the US for the second week running. That makes it the first soundtrack to spend more than a week at No.1 since Guardians Of The Galaxy two years ago.
The film is doing well at the box office too – with fans ignoring reviews and turning up in their droves to check out the film. This weekend it was No.1 in the box office for the third weekend in a row, and it’s now the fourth biggest film of the summer.

There has been a huge amount of hype over the follow-up to Channel Orange since the debut solo album was a huge hit back in 2012. Channel Orange was Ocean’s first full-length release away from his time with Odd Future, and was critically acclaimed and commercially successful.
Ocean’s second album was widely assumed to be called Boys Don’t Cry, but was eventually revealed to be titled Blond (with some discrepancy over the spelling – the artwork spells it Blond, while Apple Music spells it Blonde), with Boys Don’t Cry instead being the name for the 360-page magazine that comes with the album’s physical edition.
It finally dropped over the weekend after many, many false alarms. Blond came a few days after the release of visual album Endless, and is only available to listen to on Apple Music.
The full video for ‘Nikes’ is streaming for free though.

Whatever people’s reaction, Blond has been a subject of speculation for a very long time. The album was supposed to be released at some point last year but never materialised, and since then Ocean has enjoyed stringing things out.
Last month, a picture of a library sticker with Boys Don’t Cry (thought to be the album’s title) at the bottom and a string of dates, emerged on his website. The date at the very bottom was July 2016, with the exact date smudged.
When it didn’t appear in July, he then launched a live stream at the start of August, which showed a man sitting at a desk cutting wood, and lasted four days. When it ended though, there was still no album.
So whether you’re a fan of Ocean or not, at least now the news stories will simmer down.

Searle, who was the guitarist for the British metalcore band, was diagnosed with cancer three years ago and, as ITV News reports, had undergone several surgeries.
In early June, he managed to play Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park festivals, both of which are in Germany. A few days later though, he had to be placed in a medically-induced coma in a hospital in Luxembourg, and the band cancelled their European festival tour and a US headline tour.
After awaking five days later and returning to the UK, Searle took another bad turn two weeks ago, from which he never recovered.
Dan Searle, Tom’s twin brother and the band’s drummer, paid tribute to his brother and bandmate on Facebook, which you can read in full below.
“It is with unbelievable pain and sadness that I have to announce that at around twelve minutes past midnight on August 20th my amazing brother, Tom, passed away after over 3 years living with cancer.
He was an incredible songwriter and guitarist. He was my closest and oldest friend. He was a funny, intelligent and sweet man and he leaves an enormous void in all of our lives.
Many of you will be aware that Tom has been absent from various shows over the past 15 months and I can now let you know that this was due to various surgeries that he had to have to treat the cancer. When we left for our European Festival tour on June 2nd Tom was very unwell. He had been advised to stay in hospital to receive care but ultimately there was nothing that they could do for him and he signed himself out of the ward two days before we departed for Germany. Some of you might view this as reckless but this is the way Tom wanted to do things throughout his last year because he never wanted the cancer to get in the way of what he loved. He got on stage and performed his last two shows at Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park, which took him an incredible amount of strength but those are two shows that we will never forget.
We had to cancel our European festival tour and US headline tour because on June 8th, in Luxembourg, Tom was extremely sick, we called an ambulance and he was taken into ICU. The following day he was placed into a medically induced coma and the doctors told us that it was unlikely that they’d ever be able to wake him. Five days later, against all the odds, he was awake again, and in a few short days following that, myself and Tom cancelled the air ambulance that was due to take him home and we got the Eurostar train home. Classic Tom Searle.
He spent the last 2 months of his life fighting with everything he had to overcome the disease once and for all, and things appeared to be moving in the right direction, but in the last 2 weeks it suddenly took a turn for the worse and finally he left us.
I don’t know what will become of Architects. Me and Tom started playing in a band together when we were 13 and, really, Architects is just an evolution of the band that we started all the way back then, over half my life ago. To pretend that Tom wasn’t at the heart of everything that the band created would be to show a complete lack of respect to the amazing talent that he was. The band will never be the same and there is simply no denying it.
We will 100% tour All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, there is no doubt about that. We will be going to Australia in a few weeks and we will be doing our UK and European headline tour in October and November. We hope that these shows will be an opportunity for everyone out there to show their respects to my wonderful brother. It won’t be easy for us to get on stage and play every night without him, but its something that we must do.
We want to carry on, that is important to say, and we will strive to do so, but we will not release any music unless we truly believe that it is something that Tom would have been proud of. Whether or not we can achieve that is something that we will have to discover in time.
The Martlets Hospice in Hove took unbelievable care of Tom in his final days. We were constantly blown away by their compassion and hard work and we feel hugely indebted to them for ensuring that we were able to make some amazing memories with Tom before he passed away. For now we need to begin to process what has happened. Myself, Sam, Ali and Adam will need time to fully come to terms with the loss of our brother and we hope that everyone out there will continue to respect our privacy during this terribly difficult time.

Despite pushing his album back to October 14th due to sample clearance issues, French Montana’s new album MC4 has now leaked online due to a blunder made by the U.S. discount retailer.
Announcing the pushback a mere three days before the official August 19th release date, unfortunately for French physical copies had already been sent out to retailers and because of this an employee at Target – the location of which is unknown at this time but another Twitter user (@BAK_yn) found the album on shelves in Tulsa, OK – accidentally put the album out on sale Friday morning.

Twitter user Matt Albin happened to notice MC4 on the rack when he popped in to the store to purchase the new Tory Lanez album and quickly took to social media to report his unexpected discovery:
“I went to a Target to purchase Tory Lanez’ new album I Told You and sitting right next to the album was MC4,” Albin wrote on his site, Fashionably Early. “I went to the self-checkout and had to receive customer assistance. The employee that came to fix the issue knew the album was pushed back and didn’t allow me to purchase it. After the fact, I contacted another Target employee that I know and he revealed that it is possible to purchase the album despite the pushback. It just depends on the employee you are dealing with.”
Featuring Drake, Jeezy, A$ AP Rocky, Kodak Black, Miguel, Kanye West, Nas, Beanie Sigel, Jadakiss, Styles P, Max B, and a posthumes verse from Chinx, it is unknown how this will affect MC4’s sales or whether or not Epic Records will release the album early digitally and then release a different version of the album on the revised October 14th date.

The visuals to their storming new single, ‘Moon Queen’ can be viewed exclusively on Gigwise below.
Their guitars create an atmospheric wall of sound afflicted with paranoia that nods to My Bloody Valentine. Meanwhile, the tastefully reverb-caked vocals resemble The Horrors, and the visceral drums drive things along with a lethal amount of hard-hitting punk rock energy.
The video’s theme revolves around man’s loneliness, and inability to deal with the basics in life as a string of nightmarish events play out around him. The film does well to portray a warped dream in such detail and suggests how depression permeates the sub-conscious.
The band are scheduled for a number of UK tour dates, including an appearance at the reputable indie festival, End Of The Road, which is the biggest UK show of their career so far. And although they are one of the smaller bands on the bill, don’t under estimate their potential live – they should be on your must-see list if you’re heading down.
‘Moon Queen’ is taken from their album, 100% Sunshine, which was produced by Chad Munson and mixed by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastien) and is set for release on 2 September. This is their first full length since last year’s Burnt Black Cars.
